Why Every Couple Should Meet Their Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Your photographer one of the people you'll spend the most time with on one of the biggest days of your life.

I spent the day at Hitched Manawatu chatting with newly engaged couples, and there was one question that came up over and over again.

"How do we know which photographer to choose?"

It's a fair question.

You'll probably spend hours scrolling Instagram, comparing websites, reading reviews, and looking through wedding packages.

But here's my advice.

Meet them.

Even if it's not me.

Grab a coffee. Jump on a video call. Have a chat at a wedding show. Whatever works.

Because while beautiful photos matter, they're only part of the story.

Your photographer is with you through the biggest moments of your day, from planning to rehearsal to saying I do to cutting the cake!

Your photographer isn't someone who arrives for an hour, takes a few photos and heads home.

We're there while you're getting ready.

We'll see your loved one helping you get ready.

We'll calm your nerves before you walk down the aisle.

We'll wrangle family members for group photos.

We'll laugh and be silly with your bridal party.

We'll remind you to take a breath or have some water. We'll let the celebrant know we're ready to go and make sure the picnic basket for photos is ready to go.

We're part of your day.

That's why the relationship matters just as much as the photos.

Chemistry is everything.

I hear it all the time.

"We're awkward in front of the camera."

The truth is, almost everyone says that, the best photos don't come from knowing how to pose. They come from feeling safe enough to laugh, cuddle, cry, dance and simply be yourselves. That starts long before your wedding day.

If you feel comfortable with your photographer, your photos will naturally reflect that.

What happens when we catch up?

A lot of couples think a consultation is a sales meeting.

Mine isn't. It's simply a chance to get to know each other.

We'll chat about your plans, your venue, what's important to you, and what you want your day to feel like.

I'll answer your questions honestly. If you're unsure about timelines, I'll help.

If you're trying to decide between two ceremony locations, we'll talk it through.

If you're wondering how long family photos actually take, I've got you.

Sometimes we don't even talk about photography all that much.

We talk about dogs.

Travel.

How you met.

The things that make your relationship yours.

Because those are the things I'll be photographing.

I'll never pressure you into booking.

This might sound strange coming from a wedding photographer, but I actually encourage couples to meet more than one photographer.

Why?

Because this isn't about choosing the most popular photographer. It's about choosing the person who feels right. Every photographer has a different style. Every photographer has a different personality.

Every couple is different too.

If you leave our chat thinking, "Helen is our person," then that's amazing.

If you leave feeling someone else is a better fit, that's okay too.

I'd much rather you book someone you completely trust than feel like you've been talked into a decision.

I'm choosing too.

This might surprise you.

When we meet, I'm not just thinking about whether you'll book me.

I'm thinking about whether we're a good fit for each other.

The best weddings happen when there's trust.

When we can laugh together.

When you feel comfortable enough to tell me what's important to you.

When I can quietly blend into your day and capture the moments that actually matter.

That's when the magic happens.

Trust creates better photos.

One of my favourite moments at every wedding is when couples stop thinking about the camera altogether.

They're completely present.

They're laughing.

Holding hands.

Sneaking little glances at each other.

Those moments don't happen because I own an expensive camera.

They happen because we've already built a relationship before the wedding day.

My biggest piece of advice?

Don't book your wedding photographer based on Instagram alone.

Meet them.

Ask questions.

See how they make you feel.

Imagine spending eight or ten hours with them on one of the most emotional days of your life.

Because long after the cake has been eaten and the flowers have faded, your photographs will help you remember how it all felt.

And the person behind the camera plays a bigger part in that than most people realise.

If you're planning your wedding...

I'd love to shout you a coffee, hear your story, and chat about your plans.

No pressure. No sales pitch. Just some humans seeing if we're the right fit.

Because finding the right wedding photographer isn't just about finding someone whose photos you love. It's about finding someone you'll love having by your side on your wedding day. 🤍
